Fall in Taichung: A Day Trip for Art Lovers, Shoppers, and Pasta Fans

Autumn in Taichung brings cool breezes and warm sunshine—the perfect combination for a laid-back day trip exploring hidden gems tucked away in the city’s alleyways.

I took a mini trip to Taichung this fall and visited ZASSO Gallery to visit the solo painting exhibition "Vanishing Point" by artist Luke M Walker.

For this autumn micro-tour, slow down and wander leisurely through Taichung's corners. Start at Zasso Shop & Gallery, an art space that blends contemporary art with handmade crafts; next, pop into Weier Tableware, a cosy shop filled with vintage tableware from around the world; and finally, indulge in Japanese-style pasta at Pasta Labbito. As night falls, head to PARK2 Caowu Plaza to cap off the day with a refreshing evening stroll.

1. Zasso Shop & Gallery – Where Art Meets Style

Tucked away in an alley on Wuquan West 6th Street, Zasso Shop & Gallery is a multi-functional space where art meets retail. On the first floor, you’ll find a selection of handmade items, including clothing, ceramics, and textiles, all displayed in a warm, wood-toned setting. Artworks adorn every corner, making your shopping experience feel like a leisurely art tour.

A spiral staircase leads to the second floor, where exhibitions feature various artists and craftsmen. During our visit, British artist Luke M. Walker’s solo exhibition Vanishing Point was on display. Walker’s charcoal and printmaking pieces highlight scenes from cities he’s visited, like London, Paris, Tokyo, and Taipei, capturing each place’s unique vibe with delicate brushstrokes.

There is a big tree as high as two stories high at the door, and ZASSO is hidden in it.

The first floor is filled with a variety of exquisite objects, interspersed with displays of artists' works.

2. Wareway Tableware – A Nostalgic Gem for Tableware Lovers

Just a short stroll from Zasso Gallery lies Wareway Tableware, a charming shop with a retro vibe. A cheerful grandmother often greets customers, creating a welcoming, homey atmosphere. The shop’s dark wooden cabinets and terrazzo floors add to its vintage allure.

Inside, you’ll find an eclectic mix of glassware and ceramic tableware collected worldwide, each piece telling a story of the past. From Taiwanese-style ceramics to quirky glassware, Wareway’s unique selection is perfect for those who appreciate well-curated table aesthetics.

3. Pasta Labbito – Japanese-style Pasta with a Twist

Hidden near PARK2 Sogo Plaza, Pasta Labbito stands out with its open courtyard, giant staghorn ferns, and vintage Vespa scooters. The rustic, wooden decor and soft lighting create a cosy, relaxed atmosphere that’s ideal for unwinding over a meal.

The open kitchen showcases the dedication of the Japanese chef-owner as he crafts each dish with precision. Menu highlights include classic bolognese, prosciutto with egg yolk pasta, mentaiko scallop pasta, and a refreshing lemon rosemary shrimp pasta. Each dish balances traditional and inventive flavours, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Final Stop: PARK2 Caowu Plaza – A Relaxing End to Your Day Trip

Wrap up your day with a stroll around PARK2 Caowu Plaza. Grab a drink, browse souvenir shops, or take a leisurely walk along Caowu Road, feeling the crisp autumn air. If you have extra time, start your day with a visit to the nearby National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, then explore the surrounding alleys for even more art galleries and quaint shops waiting to be discovered.

This one-day Taichung trip offers the perfect mix of art, unique finds, and culinary delights, making it a memorable way to experience the beauty of autumn in the city.
